VFX Flipbook Tool
Turn a PNG sequence, video (MP4, WebM), or GIF into a sprite sheet, or slice a sheet back into frames. Preview the loop, knock out black backgrounds, export a GIF, and get the exact Unity settings.
MP4 (H.264) and WebM work in all major browsers. WebM with an alpha channel keeps transparency in Chrome and Edge. ProRes MOV files are not supported. For effects rendered on black, turn on Black background → alpha after extracting.

GIF settings
GIF has 256 colors and on/off transparency, so soft glows look rough. For glow effects, use a solid background.

The VFX Flipbook Tool is a free online sprite sheet generator. It turns a PNG sequence, a video, or a GIF into a single sprite sheet, slices an existing sprite sheet back into individual frames, converts black backgrounds to alpha, exports animated GIFs, and shows the Unity settings needed to play the result. Everything runs in your browser, so your files are never uploaded.
How to make a sprite sheet from a PNG sequence
- Export your effect as a numbered PNG sequence, for example
fire_01.pngtofire_32.png. - Drag all frames into the drop area on the Frames / Video → Sheet tab. Frames are sorted by file name, so frame_2 comes before frame_10.
- Keep Auto grid on, or set the columns and rows yourself. Use Use every Nth frame to thin out long sequences.
- For effects rendered on black, turn on Black background → alpha. Choose the frame scale and maximum texture size, then click Download sheet PNG.
How to convert a video or GIF to a sprite sheet
- On the Frames / Video → Sheet tab, drop a single MP4, WebM, or GIF file into the drop area.
- For a video, set the Start and End time and how many Frames to take; they are spread evenly across that range. For a GIF, choose Use every Nth frame.
- Set the Max frame width (512 px by default), then click Extract frames. The preview FPS is set to match the original speed.
- Adjust the grid and output as usual, then download the sprite sheet, the frames as a ZIP, or a GIF.
How to use the sprite sheet in Unity
In the Particle System, enable the Texture Sheet Animation module, set Mode to Grid, and enter the Tiles X and Y shown in the Unity settings panel. Set Start Lifetime to the value the tool calculates so the frames play once at your chosen FPS. The panel also lists matching settings for a Shader Graph Flipbook node and a VFX Graph Flipbook output, and you can copy them with one click.
How to split a sprite sheet into frames
Switch to the Sheet → Frames tab, drop a sprite sheet, and enter its columns and rows. File names such as fire_8x8.png set the grid automatically. Click Download frames (ZIP) to get every frame as a separate PNG.
How to turn a PNG sequence or sprite sheet into a GIF
- Load your PNG frames, or switch to Sheet → Frames and load a sprite sheet.
- Set the playback speed with FPS in the preview.
- Open GIF settings: choose a solid background (best for glows and soft effects) or transparent, and pick a size. Auto keeps the GIF at most 256 px wide.
- Click Download GIF. The GIF loops forever and is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

FAQ
Is this sprite sheet generator free?
Yes. The VFX Flipbook Tool is free to use, with no account and no watermark on the output.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing happens in your browser, so your images never leave your computer.
Which image formats are supported?
You can load PNG, WebP, and JPG images. The tool exports the sprite sheet as a PNG, the sliced frames as a ZIP of PNG files, and the animation as a looping GIF.
Can I convert an MP4 or GIF to a sprite sheet?
Yes. Drop a single MP4, WebM, or GIF file on the Frames / Video → Sheet tab, choose how many frames to extract, and the tool builds the sprite sheet from them. Everything runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
Does it keep transparency from a video?
WebM videos with an alpha channel keep their transparency in Chrome and Edge. MP4 files have no transparency, so for effects rendered on black, turn on Black background → alpha. ProRes MOV files are not supported.
Can I make a transparent GIF?
Yes. GIF supports only fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, so soft glow edges are blended onto an edge matte color you choose. For glow-heavy effects, a solid background usually looks better.
Why is my GIF slightly faster or slower than the preview?
GIF stores frame timing in 1/100 s steps, so speeds are rounded (24 FPS plays at about 25 FPS), and GIF playback is capped at 50 FPS.
Can I use the sprite sheets outside Unity?
Yes. The sprite sheet is a standard grid of frames in a PNG, so it works in any engine or tool that supports flipbook or sprite sheet animation. The Unity settings panel is an extra.
